Ghodamara
Ghodamara is a coastal village located in the Sundarbans region of Bangladesh. It is part of the Mongla Upazila in the Bagerhat District. The village is situated within the ecologically sensitive Sundarbans mangrove forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is heavily influenced by the tidal rivers and creeks characteristic of the region.
The economy of Ghodamara is primarily based on fishing, shrimp cultivation, and honey collection from the Sundarbans. Agriculture is limited due to the saline soil conditions.
The village faces challenges related to climate change, including rising sea levels, increased frequency of cyclones, and salinity intrusion, all of which threaten livelihoods and infrastructure. Access to clean drinking water and sanitation are also persistent issues. Conservation efforts in the Sundarbans directly impact Ghodamara, requiring a balance between sustainable resource management and the economic needs of the local population. The community is also vulnerable to human-wildlife conflict, particularly encounters with tigers.
