Moses Levy (Pennsylvanian)

Moses Levy (1757-1826) was a prominent Philadelphia lawyer and civic leader of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Philadelphia to Nathan and Hannah Levy, he was a member of a prominent Sephardic Jewish family. He studied law and was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1778. Levy served as Recorder of the City of Philadelphia from 1802 to 1822. He was also involved in numerous civic organizations and philanthropic endeavors, including serving as a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He was a staunch Federalist and later a supporter of the War of 1812. Levy was known for his legal acumen and his dedication to public service. He played a significant role in the legal and political life of Philadelphia during a period of considerable growth and change.
