98th Division (2nd Formation) (People's Republic of China)
The 98th Division (2nd Formation) was a military formation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of the People's Republic of China. It was formed in February 1951, drawing its personnel primarily from the North China Military Region’s independent regiments. Its initial organization consisted of the 292nd, 293rd, and 294th Regiments. The division was initially part of the 33rd Army.
During the Korean War, the 98th Division entered Korea in March 1951 as part of the People's Volunteer Army (PVA). It participated in several major campaigns, including the Fifth Phase Offensive. After the Korean War armistice, the division remained in Korea for a period before being withdrawn.
Following its return to China, the 98th Division was stationed in the Liaoning province. Over the years, it underwent several reorganizations and equipment upgrades, evolving into a mechanized infantry division. In the 1980s, as part of broader PLA reforms, the 98th Division was disbanded. Some of its elements were reassigned to other units. The designation "98th Division" was not subsequently re-activated within the PLA structure.
