Alexander Winkler (composer)
Alexander Winkler (born November 22, 1942) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music. His compositions include works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and voice.
Winkler studied composition at the University of British Columbia, earning a Bachelor of Music degree, and later pursued graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Master of Arts degree. His principal teachers included Barbara Pentland and Andrew Imbrie.
Winkler’s compositional style is characterized by its exploration of extended instrumental techniques, microtonality, and complex rhythmic structures. He often draws inspiration from diverse sources, including literature, visual art, and natural phenomena. His works have been performed by leading ensembles and soloists in Canada and internationally.
