Alexander Bethune (politician)
Alexander Bethune (born c. 1780, died March 1, 1843) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. He represented Glengarry in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1820 to 1824.
Born in Scotland, Bethune immigrated to Upper Canada and became a prominent merchant and landowner in the Glengarry area. He engaged in various commercial ventures, including trading and milling. He also served as a justice of the peace.
In the Legislative Assembly, Bethune generally supported the government. He was involved in debates concerning infrastructure development and issues affecting the agricultural interests of his constituents. His political career ended in 1824.
Bethune died in Williamstown, Upper Canada in 1843.
