Thaçi (tribe)

The Thaçi are a historical Albanian tribe (or fis) originating from the region of modern-day Kosovo. They traditionally inhabited areas within and around the municipality of Therandë (also known as Suhareka or Suva Reka).

Historically, the Thaçi were known for their role in resisting Ottoman rule and participating in various uprisings and movements for Albanian national independence. Like other Albanian tribes, they adhered to a traditional code of honor and customary law, known as the Kanun. While variations exist, the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini was often followed.

The social structure of the Thaçi, like other Albanian tribes, was based on patrilineal kinship, with strong family and clan ties. Their economy was primarily agrarian, with livestock raising playing a significant role.

The term "Thaçi" can also refer to people originating from the region traditionally associated with the tribe, regardless of their direct lineage within the original tribal structure. Over time, due to migrations and societal changes, the traditional tribal organization has weakened, but the name and the historical association with the region remain.
