Albert Heijn (businessman)
Albert Heijn (November 15, 1865 – December 13, 1945) was a Dutch businessman and the founder of the Albert Heijn supermarket chain, which is now the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands.
Heijn was born in Oostzaan, Netherlands. In 1887, at the age of 21, he took over his father's grocery store in Oostzaan. He quickly expanded the business, opening new branches in nearby towns. He was known for his innovative approach to retailing, including introducing self-service and offering a wider range of products than traditional grocers.
Under Heijn's leadership, the company grew rapidly throughout the 20th century. He was succeeded by his sons, Jan Heijn and Gerrit Jan Heijn, who continued to expand the business both domestically and internationally.
Heijn is considered a pioneer in the Dutch retail industry and a major figure in the development of modern supermarkets. His business acumen and innovative spirit laid the foundation for the Albert Heijn chain's enduring success. He passed away in Zaandam.
