Heythrop

Heythrop refers primarily to two entities associated with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in the United Kingdom:

  • Heythrop College, University of London: A former constituent college of the University of London specializing in philosophy and theology. Founded in 1614 in Leuven (Belgium) as a Jesuit seminary, it moved to England in the late 18th century. Over the centuries it was located at various sites before relocating to Heythrop Hall in Oxfordshire in 1926, giving the institution its name. Heythrop College moved to Kensington Square, London, in 1970 and became a constituent college of the University of London in 1971. Due to financial difficulties and declining student numbers, Heythrop College closed in 2018. Its library and archives were transferred to other institutions, including Campion Hall, Oxford, and Stonyhurst College.

  • Heythrop Hall: A large country house near Heythrop, Oxfordshire. The Hall served as the location of Heythrop College from 1926 to 1970. After Heythrop College moved to London, the Hall was sold and later became a hotel and spa. The surrounding area and village also go by the name Heythrop.
