Al Hall (musician)

Al Hall (1915-1988) was an American jazz double bassist. He was a prominent figure in the swing era and later played in various Dixieland groups. Hall was known for his strong, reliable timekeeping and melodic bass lines.

Born Alfred Wesley Hall in Jacksonville, Florida, he began his professional music career in the 1930s. He gained significant recognition while playing with Teddy Wilson's big band from 1939 to 1941. His recordings with Wilson showcase his solid technique and musicality.

After leaving Wilson's band, Hall became a sought-after bassist, performing and recording with numerous jazz luminaries, including Benny Goodman, Art Tatum, and Red Allen. He was a mainstay of the New York City jazz scene and contributed to countless recordings throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

Hall was appreciated for his versatility, equally comfortable playing in both large ensembles and smaller groups.
