Lierne (vault)

In architecture, a lierne is a decorative, non-structural rib in a Gothic vault. Liernes are distinguished from structural ribs (such as transverse, diagonal, or longitudinal ribs) because they do not spring from the main supporting points of the vault, but instead connect other ribs together.

The primary function of liernes is aesthetic, adding complexity and visual interest to the ceiling. They create intricate patterns, often forming star-shaped or net-like designs across the vault's surface. These patterns enhance the perceived height and grandeur of the space.

Lierne vaults are a development of the High Gothic period and became particularly popular in English Gothic architecture during the Decorated and Perpendicular styles. They are often associated with fan vaults, another highly decorative type of vaulting.

The term "lierne" itself is derived from the French word for "tie" or "bind," reflecting the lierne's role in connecting the structural ribs of the vault.
