The Hitmen (British band)
The Hitmen were a British punk rock band formed in 1976 in London, England. They are distinct from other bands with the same or similar names, including an Australian band also known as The Hitmen. This British incarnation of The Hitmen was associated with the early UK punk scene and is notable for a raw, energetic sound.
The band's lineup went through several changes, but the core members often included vocalist and guitarist Bernie Torme (later known for his work with Ian Gillan and Ozzy Osbourne), drummer Steve Nicol, and bassist Jim Shirras. Their music blended punk energy with hard rock influences, often featuring Torme's distinctive guitar playing.
The Hitmen released several singles in the late 1970s, including "Gonna Make You a Star," and performed extensively in the UK. They gained a following for their live shows, which were known for their intensity. Despite their presence on the punk scene, they did not achieve widespread mainstream success.
The band eventually dissolved in the early 1980s, with members pursuing other musical projects. Bernie Torme went on to a more successful solo career and collaborations with other artists.
Although relatively short-lived, The Hitmen (British band) remain a noteworthy act in the history of UK punk rock, representing a particular style of punk influenced by hard rock and blues. Their recordings and live performances are remembered by fans of the era.
