Dona Zica

Dona Zica was the name affectionately given to Alcina Cartafina, a prominent figure in the history of samba in Brazil, particularly associated with the Portela samba school in Rio de Janeiro. She was known for her powerful voice, her encyclopedic knowledge of samba, and her staunch defense of the traditions and authenticity of the art form.

Dona Zica, alongside her husband Cartola (Angenor de Oliveira), another samba legend and one of the founders of Portela, ran the iconic "Zicartola" restaurant in Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s. This establishment became a hub for musicians, artists, and intellectuals, playing a crucial role in promoting samba and its cultural significance during a period when it was not always fully appreciated by the wider Brazilian society. Zicartola provided a vital space for samba to thrive and gain recognition.

While Cartola is more widely known for his songwriting prowess, Dona Zica's contribution was equally important. She was instrumental in shaping the direction of Portela and ensuring its artistic integrity. Her influence extended to choosing themes for the samba school's parades and preserving its rich history. She was a respected figure within the samba community, known for her strong opinions and unwavering dedication to the music she loved. Her legacy lives on through the continued success and traditions of Portela. She died in 1987.
