82nd Regiment of Foot (1777)

The 82nd Regiment of Foot was a British Army infantry regiment raised in 1777 for service during the American Revolutionary War. It was also known as the "Duke of Hamilton's Regiment".

The regiment was raised in Scotland by Francis, Duke of Hamilton, as part of the British effort to suppress the rebellion in the American colonies. The regiment primarily recruited from the Scottish Highlands. It embarked for North America shortly after its formation.

During its service in North America, the 82nd Foot participated in several key engagements, including operations in Georgia and South Carolina. Notably, it was involved in the Siege of Savannah in 1779 and the Siege of Charleston in 1780.

Following the conclusion of the American Revolutionary War, the 82nd Regiment of Foot was disbanded in 1783. Its officers and men were either discharged or transferred to other regiments within the British Army. The regiment's short period of existence was solely focused on its role in the American War of Independence.
