234th Battalion (Peel), CEF

The 234th Battalion (Peel), CEF was a unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. Authorized on May 1, 1917, it was raised in Military District No. 2, specifically from the Peel County region of Ontario, Canada. The battalion was primarily recruited from the local population of Peel County, reflecting a common practice during the war of raising units based on geographic origin.

Under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel George W. Rogers, the 234th Battalion embarked for Great Britain on June 4, 1917, sailing aboard the SS Megantic. Upon arrival in England, the battalion's manpower was primarily absorbed into reinforcement drafts for existing Canadian units already serving in the trenches on the Western Front. This was a common fate for many of the later-numbered CEF battalions. They were often used to replenish the ranks of units that had suffered heavy casualties, rather than being deployed as independent fighting formations.

The 234th Battalion (Peel), CEF was officially disbanded on July 17, 1917. While it did not see active service as a distinct battalion in France or Belgium, its contribution lay in providing much-needed reinforcements to the Canadian Corps, thus supporting the ongoing war effort. The perpetuation of the 234th Battalion (Peel), CEF was assigned to the Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment).
