2017 Division 1 (Swedish football)
The 2017 Division 1 season in Swedish football was contested in two leagues: Division 1 Norra (North) and Division 1 Södra (South). These two leagues represent the third tier of the Swedish football league system. Each league contained 14 teams.
At the end of the season, the winners of Division 1 Norra and Division 1 Södra were promoted directly to Superettan (the second tier). The runners-up from each division faced each other in a two-legged playoff series for the opportunity to also be promoted to Superettan.
The bottom two teams in each division were relegated directly to Division 2 (the fourth tier). The 11th-placed teams in each division faced each other in a two-legged playoff series to avoid relegation. The loser was relegated to Division 2.
The season typically runs from April to October or November. Teams participating in the 2017 season consisted of both professional and semi-professional clubs. Promotion and relegation are crucial elements, as they determine the movement of clubs within the Swedish football pyramid.
