1895 U.S. Open (golf)

The 1895 U.S. Open was the first U.S. Open Championship, held on October 4, 1895, at the Newport Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a 36-hole tournament played in a single day, with 11 players competing: 10 professionals and one amateur. The course was a nine-hole layout played twice in both the morning and afternoon rounds.

Horace Rawlins, a 21-year-old Englishman who had recently arrived in the United States to take a club professional position at Newport, won the tournament with a score of 173 (91-82). He received $150 in prize money and a gold medal. Willie Dunn Jr. finished second, two strokes behind, and received $100.

The tournament was significant as the inaugural U.S. Open and helped to establish golf's presence in the United States. In addition to the U.S. Open, the Newport Golf Club also hosted the inaugural U.S. Amateur Championship on the days following the U.S. Open.
