Zannino

Zannino was a stock character in the Commedia dell'arte. He is a zanni, or servant, type, often depicted as a cunning, quick-witted, and mischievous figure. He is typically portrayed as more intelligent and resourceful than the more simple-minded zanni like Arlecchino. Zannino often acts as a facilitator of the plot, using his wiles to help or hinder the other characters, often motivated by self-interest and a desire for food or money. While sharing some characteristics with other zanni, Zannino often demonstrates a greater degree of awareness and strategic thinking in his actions. His costume usually consists of loose-fitting white clothing, sometimes adorned with patches, and a small cap. He may or may not wear a mask. The name "Zannino" is itself a diminutive form of "Giovanni" (John), a common name in Italy.
