USS Santee (1855)
The USS Santee was a sailing frigate of the United States Navy, launched in 1855. She was commissioned in 1861 at the outbreak of the American Civil War and served primarily as a training ship and in blockade duty.
During the Civil War, Santee participated in the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina, capturing several blockade runners. She also saw action against Confederate forces ashore.
Following the Civil War, Santee continued her service as a training ship for the U.S. Naval Academy and later for apprentice seamen. She played a significant role in training generations of naval officers and enlisted personnel.
In the late 19th century, she was converted into a stationary training ship, eventually being laid up and sold for scrap in 1912. While not a warship known for major battles, the Santee's enduring legacy lies in her contribution to naval education and training.
