Younkers

Younkers was a department store chain founded in 1856 in Keokuk, Iowa. Originally named Younker and Brothers, it grew to become a major regional retailer in the Midwestern United States. The company offered a wide range of goods, including clothing, accessories, home furnishings, and cosmetics.

Throughout its history, Younkers expanded through organic growth and acquisitions, eventually operating stores across several states, including Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. The chain was known for its customer service, moderate price points, and community involvement. Many Younkers locations served as anchors in shopping malls throughout the Midwest.

The company faced increased competition from national retailers and online shopping during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Younkers went through several ownership changes, including being acquired by Equifax and later The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc.

In 2018, The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., filed for bankruptcy and subsequently liquidated all of its stores, including all Younkers locations. The closure of Younkers marked the end of a long and significant chapter in Midwestern retail history. The name and intellectual property rights to Younkers are currently owned by CSC Generation Holdings, Inc.
