Singur (community development block)

Singur is a community development block (CD Block) in the Srirampore subdivision of the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Geography

Singur is located at 22°44′N 88°14′E.

The CD Block is part of the Hooghly-Damodar Plain, one of the three natural regions of the district composed of old alluvial deposits. The elevation is low, and gradients are gentle. The soil is fertile and suitable for agriculture.

Demographics

As per the 2011 Census of India, Singur CD Block had a total population of 246,429, of which 233,001 were rural and 13,428 were urban. Among the 233,001 rural inhabitants, 126,069 were males and 117,362 were females. Among the 13,428 urban inhabitants, 6,840 were males and 6,588 were females. The total number of Scheduled Castes was 62,653 and the number of Scheduled Tribes was 1,042.

Literacy

As per the 2011 census, the total number of literates in Singur CD Block was 180,261, out of which 101,354 were males and 78,907 were females. The literacy rate was 81.38 %. The male literacy rate was 87.78 % and the female literacy rate was 74.58 %.

Economy

The economy of the Singur CD Block is primarily based on agriculture. Rice and potatoes are major crops.

Controversy

Singur gained significant national and international attention in the mid-2000s due to the controversial establishment of a Tata Motors Nano car factory. The acquisition of agricultural land for the project led to widespread protests by farmers and political opposition, ultimately resulting in the relocation of the factory to Sanand, Gujarat. This event had a significant impact on West Bengal politics and economic development.
