Yang Jing (Ming dynasty)
Yang Jing (楊經, dates uncertain, likely late 15th-early 16th century) was a Ming Dynasty military official and fortress designer. He is best known for his work on the Great Wall, particularly during the reign of the Hongzhi Emperor (1487-1505) and the Zhengde Emperor (1505-1521).
Yang Jing served in the border regions and gained a reputation for his expertise in fortification and defense. He was frequently consulted on matters related to improving the structural integrity and defensive capabilities of the Great Wall. His work involved assessing existing sections of the wall, identifying vulnerabilities, and proposing solutions for repair and enhancement.
While specific details of his career are somewhat limited due to the fragmented nature of historical records, Yang Jing's contribution to the Great Wall construction and maintenance during the Ming Dynasty is acknowledged in historical texts pertaining to border defense and military administration of the period. His role involved not only overseeing repairs but also likely innovating in design and construction techniques to improve the effectiveness of the fortifications against potential Mongol incursions. The longevity and strategic importance of the Great Wall are partly attributable to the contributions of dedicated officials and engineers like Yang Jing.
