Yakgwa
Yakgwa (약과), also known as honey cookies, are a type of Korean traditional confectionery. They are deep-fried wheat-based cookies that are infused with ginger juice, sesame oil, and cheongju (rice wine), and then coated in a syrup made from honey. Yakgwa are known for their rich, sweet flavor and their distinctive flower shape, often resembling a chrysanthemum.
These cookies are commonly enjoyed during traditional holidays and special occasions such as Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) and weddings. Yakgwa are considered a symbol of good luck and well-being.
The process of making yakgwa is labor-intensive and requires skill. The dough must be carefully kneaded and shaped, and the frying temperature must be precisely controlled to achieve the desired texture – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Variations in yakgwa recipes and styles exist depending on the region and family traditions. Some recipes may include additional ingredients like cinnamon or nuts.
