Xue Long

Xue Long (雪龙), also known as the Snow Dragon, is a Chinese icebreaker research vessel. Built in Ukraine in 1993, and subsequently refitted in China, it is China's primary Antarctic research vessel. It is operated by the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC).

Xue Long is capable of breaking through ice up to 1.1 meters thick. It has played a significant role in China's Antarctic and Arctic exploration programs, undertaking numerous scientific expeditions to the polar regions. These expeditions have contributed to research in areas such as climate change, marine biology, geology, and glaciology.

The ship's name, "Xue Long," translates literally to "Snow Dragon" in English. It reflects the ship's ability to navigate through icy conditions and its crucial role in exploring the polar regions on behalf of China. It serves as a platform for scientists to conduct research and collect data in challenging environments. The vessel typically carries helicopters to assist with ice reconnaissance and logistical support.

In recent years, China has also commissioned a second icebreaker, Xue Long 2 (雪龙2), also known as Kunlun, to further expand its polar research capabilities. However, Xue Long remains an important part of China's polar research infrastructure.
