Wool bale

A wool bale is a standard-sized and densely packed package of wool that is prepared for transportation and sale. The process of creating a wool bale involves shearing the wool from sheep, skirting (removing undesirable pieces of fleece), classing (sorting the wool based on characteristics like fiber diameter, length, strength, and color), and then pressing the wool into a large rectangular package using a wool press.

Wool bales are typically made of woven polypropylene or jute material, although the specific materials may vary depending on regional standards and regulations. The bales are designed to protect the wool from damage and contamination during storage and shipping. They are secured with metal straps or plastic banding to maintain their shape and density.

The weight and dimensions of a wool bale can vary, but they generally weigh between 110 kg (240 lbs) and 204 kg (450 lbs). Standard bale sizes are often dictated by international wool trading agreements and the capabilities of handling equipment. The specific dimensions are designed for efficient stacking and transport on ships, trucks, and trains.

Wool bales are the primary unit of sale in the global wool trade. Upon arrival at processing facilities, the bales are opened, and the wool is further processed into various textile products. The identification markings on the bale, including the wool classer's identification, bale number, and other relevant information about the wool's characteristics, are critical for traceability and quality control throughout the supply chain.
