William Hiester (Pennsylvania politician)
William Hiester (September 10, 1747 – June 10, 1821) was an American politician from Pennsylvania. He served as a U.S. Representative and later as the Governor of Pennsylvania.
Born in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, Hiester was engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of Colonel. He was a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly from 1787 to 1790, and served in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1790 to 1794.
Hiester was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Congresses, serving from March 4, 1797, to March 3, 1803. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania in 1805 and 1808. However, he was elected Governor in 1820 and served until his death in office the following year. He died in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and was interred in the Harrisburg Cemetery.
