William Davis (journalist)
William Davis (1933 – 2019) was a German-born British journalist and author, best known for his long tenure as editor of Punch magazine and for his writing on economics and business.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Davis emigrated to the United Kingdom as a child. He began his career in journalism at the Financial Times where he became its youngest ever city editor. He then moved to The Guardian, working as a financial editor before joining Punch.
Davis edited Punch from 1969 to 1977, a period of significant change for the satirical magazine. He broadened its scope and modernized its appeal while maintaining its traditional wit.
Following his time at Punch, Davis continued to write extensively on economic and financial matters. He authored several books including "Money Talks," "The Innovators," and "Inside the City." He also contributed articles to various newspapers and magazines. Davis was known for his clear and accessible writing style, making complex economic issues understandable to a wider audience.
