William Clerk (jurist)
William Clerk (1770-1832) was a Scottish advocate and Sheriff of Kirkcudbrightshire.
Clerk was born in Edinburgh on 28 July 1770, the son of John Clerk of Eldin, a naval tactician and author, and Susannah Rattray. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1793.
He served as Advocate Depute from 1807 to 1811, prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the Crown. In 1811, he was appointed Sheriff of Kirkcudbrightshire, a position he held until his death.
Clerk was known for his legal acumen and dedication to his duties. He was married to Margaret Maxwell, and they had several children. He died on 16 March 1832. His brother was John Clerk, Lord Eldin, also a prominent Scottish judge.
