Henry St. John (congressman)
Henry St. John (1874 – 1939) was a U.S. Representative from Tennessee. Born in Jackson County, Alabama, he received his early education in the public schools and at Burritt College in Spencer, Tennessee. He graduated from the law department of Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1903 and was admitted to the bar in the same year, commencing practice in Sparta, Tennessee.
St. John served as the city attorney of Sparta from 1903 to 1907, and as a member of the Tennessee State Senate from 1907 to 1909. He was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second Congress (March 4, 1911 – March 3, 1913). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1912 to the Sixty-third Congress.
After his congressional term, St. John resumed the practice of law in Sparta. He served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1924. He was also involved in agricultural pursuits. He died in Sparta, Tennessee, and was interred in Highland Cemetery.
