John Wells (filmmaker)
John Wells (born May 28, 1956) is an American film and television producer, writer, and director. He is known for his work on several acclaimed and long-running television series, including ER, The West Wing, Third Watch, Southland, Shameless, and Animal Kingdom.
Wells began his career in television, writing and producing for shows such as China Beach and ER, for which he received multiple Emmy Awards. He served as showrunner on ER for several seasons, helping to establish its signature style and medical realism. He also executive produced and wrote for The West Wing, a political drama that won numerous awards and critical acclaim.
Beyond television, Wells has produced and directed feature films. His film directorial debut was The Company Men (2010), followed by August: Osage County (2013) and Burnt (2015). He has also served as a producer on films such as One Hour Photo (2002), Far From Heaven (2002), and Love & Mercy (2014).
