Whelford

Whelford is a village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is located in the Cotswolds, on the River Coln. The village is approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Fairford and 8 miles (13 km) east of Cirencester.

The name Whelford is derived from the Old English Hwēolford, meaning "ford by the wheel". This suggests the presence of a watermill or a similar wheel-based structure near a ford across the river.

Historically, Whelford was an agricultural community. The Domesday Book recorded the village as belonging to Winchcombe Abbey. The parish church of St. Anne is a Grade II listed building, primarily dating from the 13th century with later additions and renovations.
