Arcturus (band)
Arcturus is a Norwegian avant-garde metal band formed in 1991. The band is known for its experimental and atmospheric approach to black metal, incorporating elements of classical music, progressive rock, and jazz.
History:
Arcturus was formed by Steinar Sverd Johnsen (keyboards) and Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg (drums). The initial lineup also included guitarist/vocalist Marius Vold. Their early sound was rooted in symphonic black metal, exemplified by their debut album, Aspera Hiems Symfonia (1995), which featured guest vocals by Ihsahn of Emperor.
Following Vold's departure, Garm (Kristoffer Rygg, also known as Trickster G.) of Ulver joined as vocalist, marking a significant shift in the band's sound. Their second album, La Masquerade Infernale (1997), is considered a landmark release in avant-garde metal, showcasing a more theatrical and experimental style.
Over the subsequent years, Arcturus continued to evolve, releasing albums such as Disguised Masters (1999), an album of remixes, The Sham Mirrors (2002), and Sideshow Symphonies (2005). These albums further solidified their reputation for pushing the boundaries of extreme metal.
In 2007, Arcturus announced their disbandment, citing a lack of inspiration and creative stagnation.
The band reformed in 2011 and eventually released their fifth studio album, Arcturian (2015), which was met with positive reviews.
Musical Style and Influences:
Arcturus' music is characterized by its complex compositions, incorporating dissonant harmonies, unconventional time signatures, and a wide range of instrumentation. Sverd's keyboard work is central to their sound, providing both melodic and atmospheric textures. Garm's distinctive vocals, ranging from clean singing to harsh screams, further contribute to the band's unique identity. Their music often explores themes of cosmic horror, philosophy, and the human condition.
Influences cited by the band members include classical composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók, as well as progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson. They are also influenced by jazz and various forms of experimental music.
