What Dreams May Come (film)

What Dreams May Come is a 1998 American fantasy drama film directed by Vincent Ward and starring Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Annabella Sciorra. The film is based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson.

The film tells the story of Chris Nielsen (Williams), a pediatrician who dies in a car accident and journeys into the afterlife. He struggles to accept his new existence but is guided by Albert Lewis (Gooding Jr.), who was Chris's mentor in life. He discovers that the afterlife is shaped by one's beliefs and emotions, allowing individuals to create their own personal heaven.

However, Chris's wife, Annie (Sciorra), is unable to cope with the loss of her husband and children, and descends into a deep depression, ultimately committing suicide. Chris learns that those who commit suicide are condemned to a desolate and nightmarish realm. Driven by his love for Annie, Chris embarks on a perilous journey into hell to rescue her soul.

What Dreams May Come is known for its visually stunning depiction of the afterlife, achieved through a combination of painting, practical effects, and CGI. The film explores themes of love, loss, grief, faith, and the power of the human spirit to overcome even the darkest of circumstances. It received mixed reviews upon its release, with praise for its visuals and performances but criticism for its pacing and sentimentality. The film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
