Watain
Watain is a Swedish black metal band formed in 1998 in Uppsala. The band's name is taken from an early demo by the American black metal act Von. Watain is known for its intense live performances, heavily steeped in Satanic and anti-cosmic ideology, and often involving the use of animal blood, burning torches, and other ritualistic elements.
Musically, Watain is characterized by its raw, aggressive sound, drawing influence from classic black metal bands such as Mayhem, Dissection, and Bathory. Their lyrical themes explore Satanism, death, chaos, and the occult.
The band's discography includes several full-length albums, including:
- Rabid Death's Curse (2000)
- Casus Luciferi (2003)
- Sworn to the Dark (2007)
- Lawless Darkness (2010)
- The Wild Hunt (2013)
- Trident Wolf Eclipse (2018)
- The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain (2022)
Watain has gained a significant following within the black metal community and has toured extensively worldwide. They have also been the subject of controversy due to their extreme imagery and beliefs, leading to cancellations of shows and bans in some locations. Despite the controversy, Watain remains a prominent and influential band in the contemporary black metal scene.
