Warren Smith (jazz trombonist)

Warren Smith (1927 – 2021) was an American jazz trombonist, drummer, percussionist, vocalist, and educator. Though primarily known for his trombone playing, Smith was a highly versatile musician proficient in a wide range of instruments and styles.

Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to New York City in the 1950s and quickly became a sought-after sideman, performing and recording with a diverse array of jazz luminaries including Count Basie, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. He was a vital part of the vibrant New York jazz scene for decades.

Beyond his instrumental work, Smith was also an accomplished vocalist and composer. He explored avant-garde and experimental music, often incorporating elements of world music and theater into his performances.
