Jazz Jackrabbit (2002 video game)

Jazz Jackrabbit (2002 video game), also known as Jazz Jackrabbit 3D, was a canceled third-person platformer video game developed by Project Two Interactive and intended to be published by Gathering of Developers. It was meant to be a follow-up to the popular Jazz Jackrabbit series of MS-DOS games created by Epic MegaGames (now Epic Games).

The game aimed to transition the 2D side-scrolling gameplay of its predecessors into a 3D environment. The plot reportedly involved Jazz traveling through time to prevent his nemesis, Devan Shell, from altering history. Features included platforming challenges, combat, and a shift in tone toward a more mature audience compared to the earlier, more cartoonish games.

Development began in 1999, but the project faced numerous delays and challenges, including engine changes and shifting creative directions. Ultimately, Gathering of Developers decided to cancel the game in 2000, citing concerns about its quality and marketability. Despite the cancellation, unfinished builds and assets of Jazz Jackrabbit 3D have been leaked and circulated online, offering a glimpse into what the game might have been. These leaks have allowed fans to explore the environments, experiment with the gameplay mechanics, and speculate about the game's potential. The unfinished state of the game, however, prevents a complete and accurate assessment of its final form. While never officially released, it remains a noteworthy entry in the history of the Jazz Jackrabbit franchise and a cautionary tale in video game development.
