War of Attrition (horse)

War of Attrition was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2006 Epsom Derby.

Background:

Foaled on April 24, 2003, War of Attrition was sired by Presenting out of the mare Miss Kilroy. He was trained by Mouse Morris in Ireland until after his Epsom Derby win, and then by Jeremy Noseda in Newmarket. He raced in the colours of Bridget Bryne.

Racing Career:

War of Attrition's early career was relatively undistinguished, running in National Hunt Flat races (bumper races) before transitioning to flat racing. He improved significantly in the spring of 2006, leading up to the Epsom Derby.

2006 Epsom Derby:

War of Attrition, starting at odds of 33/1, won the 2006 Epsom Derby in a driving finish. The race was notable for a strong early pace and several fancied runners failing to perform to expectations. His victory was considered a surprise, although his connections had expressed confidence in his stamina.

Later Career:

Following his Derby victory, War of Attrition did not achieve the same level of success. He ran in several Group 1 races but failed to win again at that level. He continued to race for several years, showing flashes of his earlier form but ultimately retiring from racing.

Significance:

War of Attrition's Epsom Derby win is remembered as a classic upset. It highlighted the unpredictable nature of racing and the importance of stamina in the Derby distance. He represents a horse that improved dramatically and achieved a significant victory against more highly-regarded opponents.
