James Armstrong (North Carolina politician)

James Armstrong (1748 – January 27, 1828) was an American planter, lawyer, and political figure from North Carolina. He served in the North Carolina House of Commons and Senate, and also represented North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, Armstrong immigrated to the Province of North Carolina in 1768. He settled in what became Warren County and engaged in planting. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice in Warren County.

Armstrong was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons, serving several terms (1783, 1785, 1786, 1789). He was then elected to the North Carolina Senate (1792-1795).

In 1794, Armstrong was elected to the Third United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Nathaniel Macon. He served from February 3, 1795, to March 3, 1795. He subsequently served in the Fourth Congress, holding his seat from March 4, 1795, to March 3, 1797. During his time in Congress, he was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party.

Armstrong returned to North Carolina and resumed his legal practice and planting interests. He died in Warren County in 1828 and is buried in the family cemetery there.
