Ventanilla (Philippine architecture)
A ventanilla is a small window, often sliding, found in traditional Philippine architecture, particularly in houses from the Spanish colonial period. It is typically located beneath the main windows, often at floor level, and serves several purposes. Ventanillas allow for increased ventilation and natural light into the lower portions of the house, and also provide a means of discreetly observing activities outside without being easily seen. They are a characteristic feature of bahay na bato (stone house) architecture and other vernacular building styles influenced by Spanish design. The ventanilla design often includes capiz shells or wooden lattice work to filter light and enhance privacy. The size, shape, and decorative elements of ventanillas can vary depending on the region and the wealth of the homeowner.
