VAW-12
VAW-12, also known as Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 12, is a United States Navy squadron based at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. It is an E-2 Hawkeye squadron and part of Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3), typically deploying aboard aircraft carriers of the Atlantic Fleet.
The squadron's primary mission is to provide airborne early warning, airborne battle management, and command and control functions to the carrier strike group and joint forces. This includes detecting and tracking air and surface contacts, providing tactical information to friendly forces, and coordinating air operations.
VAW-12 has a long and distinguished history, dating back to its establishment during World War II. It has participated in numerous conflicts and operations, earning various awards and commendations. The squadron has undergone several redesignations throughout its history, reflecting changes in its mission and aircraft. Currently, VAW-12 operates the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, the latest variant of the E-2 Hawkeye platform, offering significantly enhanced radar and communication capabilities compared to its predecessors. The squadron's motto is "Bluetails".
