USS Delaware (1776)

The USS Delaware was a brig in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Built in Philadelphia in 1776, she was one of the first ships commissioned by the newly formed nation.

The Delaware was a relatively small warship, designed primarily for coastal patrol and escort duties. She was armed with a number of cannons, though the exact number varied according to historical accounts. Her main purpose was to disrupt British shipping, protect American merchant vessels, and provide support for land-based military operations.

Her service was relatively short-lived. In late 1777, while patrolling the Delaware River, the Delaware ran aground while engaging British forces. Unable to refloat her, the crew was forced to surrender, and the ship was captured by the British. The Delaware was subsequently taken into British service. The loss of the Delaware was a significant blow to the Continental Navy's efforts in the Delaware Bay region.
