Packs (band)
Packs are a Canadian indie rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 2019. The band is known for their angular guitar riffs, sardonic lyrics, and Darlene Shrugg's distinctive vocals.
History:
Packs was formed by Madeline Link (guitar/vocals), who had previously been involved in the Toronto music scene. The initial lineup solidified with the addition of Noah O'Leary (guitar), Dexter Nash (bass), and Max Brown (drums).
The band quickly gained attention within the Toronto indie scene for their energetic live performances and unique sound. They released their debut EP, Tapes, in 2020. This was followed by their debut full-length album, Take the Cake, released in 2021 on Royal Mountain Records. The album was well-received by critics, who praised its raw energy and clever songwriting.
In 2023, Packs released their second album, Crispy Crunchy Nothing, also on Royal Mountain Records. The album explored themes of anxiety, isolation, and the mundane aspects of modern life, while retaining the band's signature sound.
Musical Style and Influences:
Packs' music is generally classified as indie rock, but often incorporates elements of post-punk, art-punk, and noise rock. Critics often cite influences such as Pavement, Sonic Youth, and Wire. The band's use of dissonant chords, unconventional song structures, and stream-of-consciousness lyrics contribute to their distinctive sonic identity.
