Upington

Upington is a town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, located on the banks of the Orange River. It is the commercial, agricultural, and educational center of the Gordonia region.

History: The town's origins can be traced back to a mission station established in 1873 by Reverend Christiaan Schröder of the Rhenish Missionary Society. The mission was initially known as Olijvenhoutsdrift (Olive Wood Drift). In 1884, the area was annexed by the Cape Colony. It was later renamed Upington in 1884 in honor of Sir Thomas Upington, the Attorney-General of the Cape Colony at the time. The area played a role in the Second Boer War.
