Unnatural Causes (TV series)
Unnatural Causes is a British television crime drama series that aired on ITV from 28 October 1985 to 1 December 1986. It was based on the detective novels by P.D. James featuring Commander Adam Dalgliesh of New Scotland Yard.
The series adapted two of James' novels: Unnatural Causes (1985) and A Taste for Death (1986). Roy Marsden starred as Commander Dalgliesh, the intelligent and introspective detective known for his poetic inclinations.
Unnatural Causes (the first series, adapting the novel of the same name) sees Dalgliesh investigating the death of a crime novelist found dead in a boat on the Norfolk coast. The investigation delves into the complex relationships and hidden secrets of a group of writers and publishers gathered at a remote coastal retreat.
A Taste for Death (the second series) involves Dalgliesh investigating the gruesome murders of a vagrant and a former government minister found in a church crypt. The case explores themes of political intrigue, family secrets, and the darker aspects of human nature.
The series is known for its atmospheric settings, intricate plots, and strong performances. It remained a popular adaptation of P.D. James' work, contributing to the broader success of the Dalgliesh character on television.
