Uki goshi

Uki goshi (浮腰) is a hip technique (Koshi-waza) in Judo, and one of the original 40 throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. It is categorized as one of the eight techniques that comprise the first group, Dai-ikkyo, of Gokyo no waza.

The throw involves using the hips as a fulcrum to lift and throw the opponent (Uke) while maintaining a floating, rather than a firmly grounded, stance. This distinguishes it from other hip throws where a solid stance is crucial for leverage. The name "Uki goshi" literally translates to "floating hip".

In execution, Tori (the person executing the throw) typically draws Uke off balance, then positions themselves partially to the side of Uke. Tori wraps an arm around Uke's waist and uses the hip to lift and turn Uke, completing the throw. The lifting action and the circular movement of the hips are essential components of Uki goshi.

Uki goshi is often considered a foundational technique for learning other, more complex hip throws. It emphasizes balance, timing, and proper body positioning.
