USS Walke (DD-416)

USS Walke (DD-416) was a Sims-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War II. She was named for Rear Admiral Henry A. Walke.

Walke was laid down on 31 May 1938 at the Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts; launched on 27 October 1939; sponsored by Miss Evelyn Walke; and commissioned on 27 April 1940, Commander Thomas H. Binford in command.

Following shakedown and training cruises, Walke was initially assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. With the outbreak of war in Europe, she patrolled the Atlantic, participating in Neutrality Patrols.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Walke was transferred to the Pacific Fleet. She served primarily as an escort vessel in the South Pacific, participating in numerous convoy operations and supporting landings in the Solomon Islands. She played a significant role in the naval battles around Guadalcanal, including the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942, where she was heavily damaged by torpedoes and gunfire. Despite the severe damage, Walke remained afloat and was eventually repaired.

Following repairs, Walke continued to serve in the Pacific Theater, participating in further escort duties and supporting amphibious operations. She took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.

After the war, Walke was decommissioned on 30 November 1945 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 28 January 1947. She was sold for scrap on 18 June 1947.

Walke earned numerous battle stars for her service during World War II, a testament to her active and important role in the conflict.
