USS Lamar (APA-47)
The USS Lamar (APA-47) was a Bayfield-class attack transport that served with the US Navy during World War II. She was named for Lamar County, Texas.
Laid down on 10 December 1942 by the Western Pipe & Steel Company in San Francisco, California, under a Maritime Commission contract, she was launched on 24 April 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Robert R. McMillan. The Lamar was commissioned on 22 October 1943, with Commander H. A. Spanagel, USNR, in command.
During World War II, the USS Lamar participated in numerous campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including the assaults on Kwajalein, Saipan, Guam, Leyte, and Okinawa. She transported troops and equipment to these areas, providing critical support for the Allied war effort. After the war, she participated in Operation Magic Carpet, transporting troops back to the United States.
The USS Lamar was decommissioned on 28 February 1946 and struck from the Navy List on 17 April 1946. She was sold for scrap on 27 November 1947 to Kaiser Steel Corporation.
Awards received by the USS Lamar include multiple battle stars for her service in World War II.
