USS Houston (CL-81)

The USS Houston (CL-81) was a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. She was commissioned in December 1943 and served extensively in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Houston participated in numerous campaigns, including the Marianas campaign, the Battle of Leyte Gulf (specifically the Battle off Samar), and the invasion of Okinawa. She provided anti-aircraft support for carrier task forces and participated in shore bombardments.

Following World War II, Houston participated in Operation Magic Carpet, transporting veterans home from the Pacific. She was decommissioned in December 1947 and placed in reserve.

In 1959, Houston was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register and subsequently sold for scrap. She earned three battle stars for her service during World War II. The USS Houston (CL-81) represents a notable contribution to the US Navy's efforts in the Pacific and a crucial component of the Cleveland-class light cruiser lineage.
