Kampala

Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda. It is located in the Central Region of the country, near the northern shore of Lake Victoria. The city is spread across several hills, giving it a characteristically hilly landscape.

Historically, the area was part of the Kingdom of Buganda, and the name "Kampala" is derived from the Luganda phrase "Kasozi ka Mpala," meaning "Hill of the Impala." British Captain Frederick Lugard established a fort in Kampala in 1890, and the city subsequently grew into a major commercial and administrative center.

Kampala serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of Uganda. It is home to numerous government offices, businesses, universities, and cultural institutions. The city's economy is diverse, encompassing sectors such as manufacturing, trade, transportation, and tourism.

Kampala is a major transportation hub, connecting Uganda to other parts of East Africa and beyond. The city has an international airport, Entebbe International Airport, located about 40 kilometers away. Road networks link Kampala to other major Ugandan cities and neighboring countries.

The city is a melting pot of cultures, attracting people from all over Uganda and other parts of the world. This diversity is reflected in Kampala's architecture, cuisine, and arts scene. Notable landmarks include the Kasubi Tombs (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Uganda Museum, Namirembe Cathedral, and the Baháʼí House of Worship.

Kampala faces several challenges, including traffic congestion, air pollution, and inadequate infrastructure. Efforts are underway to address these issues and improve the quality of life for its residents.
