HMS Ostrich (1900)

HMS Ostrich was a Condor-class sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1900. These sloops were designed for general purpose duties across the British Empire, particularly in areas with shallow waters. They were constructed of steel and armed primarily with guns.

Ostrich was built by Sheerness Dockyard. As a Condor-class sloop, she displaced 980 tons and was powered by a steam engine providing approximately 1,400 horsepower, which enabled a top speed of around 13 knots. The armament typically consisted of six 4-inch guns and several smaller quick-firing guns, intended for both offensive and defensive purposes.

Details of her specific service history are somewhat limited in easily accessible records. However, vessels of her type were commonly deployed to overseas stations for patrol, surveying, and maintaining British interests in the region. These stations often included Africa, the Pacific, and the Far East.

The Condor-class sloops were phased out of service gradually during the early 20th century. The details of HMS Ostrich's eventual disposal are not readily available in all historical sources.
