Equal Opportunities Commission (United Kingdom)

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) was a non-departmental public body established in the United Kingdom with the aim of promoting equality of opportunity and combating discrimination. It was formed in 1975 under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, with a remit initially focused on sex discrimination and equal pay.

The EOC's powers included conducting formal investigations into alleged discriminatory practices, issuing non-discrimination notices, and providing advice and guidance to employers and individuals. It could also take legal action in cases of alleged discrimination. Over time, its remit expanded to include other forms of discrimination, although it primarily focused on sex discrimination and gender equality.

The Commission played a significant role in shaping equality legislation and policy in the UK. It conducted research, published reports, and campaigned for legislative changes. Its work helped to raise awareness of discrimination and promote more inclusive practices in workplaces and other areas of life.

In 2007, the EOC was merged with the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) to form the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The EHRC inherited the functions and responsibilities of the EOC, CRE, and DRC, creating a single body responsible for promoting and enforcing equality and human rights in Great Britain. The EOC no longer exists as a separate entity.
